Cycling at Risley – outstanding for all

In 2018 our cycle training provision and our work in promoting cycling for all was recognised with a Haringey council Outstanding for All award.

Cycle training

Thanks to support from the Haringey Smarter Travel team, a qualified cycle instructor comes to Risley throughout the year. Every Thursday Stefan, with the assistance of Ms Ionie and Mr Humm, teaches safe cycling, in the playground and on local roads, to children in years 4 &5. Children on the level 2 course will often cycle to Tottenham Marshes – a round trip of 12 km!

With this all-year provision we are able to offer training to over 100 children each year, who are lucky to ride the excellent children’s bikes we have bought with TfL grants.

Haringey Schools Cycling League

Risley has, since 2012, competed in the Haringey Schools Cycling League - an inter-school league for promoting cycle racing between primary schools in the borough.

The league holds monthly cycle races during the school year, including grass-track racing, cyclo-cross, time trials and hill climbs. Children have also taken part in coaching sessions at specialist cycling facilities – Hog Hill, the road circuit at Stratford and the 1948 Olympic velodrome in Herne Hill.

Risley Wheelers won this inter-school competition in 2014 and again in 2015.

Adult lessons

In 2019 we have started, with the support of Wheelie Tots, cycle lessons for parents and carers on Mondays. If you are interested, please ask at the House or the school office.
